What’s the secret for adding a dramatic flair to home gardens? “Think vertical!” says Jean Cline, Design Manager for Matthews Four Seasons. “The use of trellises, arbors, obelisks, and other vertical structures, not only increases garden space in limited areas, but adds visual interest. Whether it’s a suburban patio or a condominium or apartment balcony, going vertical can make any area more exciting.”

And Matthews is taking vertical gardening up yet another level with a new collection of furniture-quality trellises that fuses “garden-scaping” with high-line design. “Our Wall Trellis Collection gives consumers stylish alternatives to the ‘spaghetti trellises’ typically found in backyards,” Cline says. “The new trellises combine sophisticated design with furniture-like craftsmanship that discriminating consumers expect today. “

The trellis line is part of Matthews expanded focus on exterior garden products. “We’re seeing a blurring of the wall between indoor and outdoor living,” says Cline, “so it is only natural to extend the principles of style used in interior decorating to the out-of-doors.” While most gardeners will use the trellises in outdoor applications, they are suitable for use indoors as well. “They’re great for indoor climbers like philodendrons and grape ivy. They make terrific room dividers, too”, Cline adds.

The trellises come in five designs, each with a distinctive architectural flavor:
· Brookside hints of Mediterranean origins;
· Camden offers country rustic accents;
· Windgate is a southern charmer;
· Chandler reflects the American Bungalow period; and
· Lotus evokes a Far East flavor.

Matthews’ trellises are constructed from solid wood and finished with a protective heartwood stain increasing its resistant to decay, insects, and harsh weather. Factory hand-assembled, each trellis comes with mounting brackets and instructions for easy installation on walls and fences. They can also be anchored into the round and reinforced with concrete for free-standing applications.

The trellises are available at Armstrong Garden Centers, Target, Home Depot, Lowe's, and OSH.
